What is beryl?
Beryl is a beryllium aluminium cyclosilicate and the mineral species behind several famous gem and collector varieties. Aquamarine, emerald, heliodor, morganite, goshenite and red beryl are colour or composition varieties of beryl rather than unrelated minerals. Each is linked below as part of the same reference family.
Mineralogy and structure
Beryl has the formula Be3Al2Si6O18 and crystallises in the hexagonal system. Rings of silicon-oxygen tetrahedra form channels in the structure. Hardness is about 7.5-8 and specific gravity commonly ranges from 2.63 to 2.80.
Colour and appearance
Pure beryl is colourless, while trace elements create green, blue, yellow, pink and red varieties. Crystals are commonly six-sided prisms with flat or complex terminations. Transparency, colour zoning, inclusions, etching and matrix association should be described specimen by specimen.
Formation and localities
Beryl forms mainly in granitic pegmatites, where late-stage fluids concentrate beryllium and other rare elements. Important sources include Brazil, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Colombia, Namibia, Madagascar, Russia, the United States and Nigeria. The exact variety and locality are essential parts of a useful label.
Varieties and collecting
Aquamarine is blue to blue-green, heliodor is golden yellow, morganite is pink, goshenite is colourless, emerald is green and red beryl is a rare red variety. Collectors compare colour, transparency, crystal form, matrix and documented locality; treatment should be recorded separately from natural appearance.
Beryl and zodiac signs
Popular birthstone guides connect different beryl varieties with different months or zodiac signs, especially emerald with Taurus and aquamarine with Pisces. These traditions vary and do not change the mineral species or its tested properties.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
Modern crystal culture may describe beryl varieties through themes such as clarity, calm, vitality or confidence. These interpretations can explain why people enjoy the stones, but they are symbolic and not evidence of medical, energetic or predictive effects.
