What is amethyst?
Amethyst is the violet to purple variety of quartz. It shares quartz's silica framework and hardness, but its colour is produced by trace iron and natural irradiation acting together in the crystal structure.
Mineralogy and structure
As a quartz variety, amethyst crystallises in the trigonal system and has the formula SiO2. It commonly grows as prismatic crystals with six-sided cross-sections and pointed terminations. The reference properties on this page are those of quartz; a particular specimen may have inclusions, zoning or growth features of its own.
Colour and appearance
Colour ranges from pale lilac to saturated violet, often with uneven zoning between the base and termination of a crystal. Some geodes contain drusy amethyst linings, while single crystals and clusters may show clear faces, phantom growth or associations with calcite and agate.
Formation and localities
Amethyst commonly forms in hydrothermal veins and cavities, including the volcanic geodes for which Brazil and Uruguay are famous. Other important sources include Zambia, Madagascar, India, Mexico and Russia. The locality and growth environment strongly affect crystal habit and colour.
Use in collections
Collectors compare amethyst by colour saturation, transparency, crystal shape, matrix and locality. Natural colour should be distinguished from heat-treated quartz sold under other trade names.
Amethyst and zodiac signs
In popular birthstone and zodiac guides, Amethyst is often associated with Aquarius and Pisces. These zodiac crystal associations are part of modern spiritual culture and vary between traditions, countries and individual practitioners. They are not a mineralogical classification and should not be presented as a scientific property of the stone.
Esoteric meaning of Amethyst
Crystal collectors and readers of esoteric symbolism may choose Amethyst for its colour, texture, locality and personal meaning. In crystal healing and meditation traditions, it may be described with themes such as focus, grounding, protection, calm or confidence, depending on the source. These symbolic interpretations can be useful for storytelling and personal reflection, but there is no reliable scientific evidence that a mineral changes health, energy, luck or destiny.
Choosing Amethyst as a birthstone or symbolic crystal
When choosing a Amethyst birthstone, zodiac crystal or spiritual gift, compare the actual specimen: natural colour, crystal habit, transparency, inclusions, locality and condition. A mineral guide is more reliable when symbolic associations are kept separate from tested physical properties and from the description of an individual piece.
