What is Zincolivenite?
Zincolivenite is an orthorhombic copper zinc arsenate, prized for green to blue-green crystals and for its place in the olivenite family of oxidised ore minerals.
Mineralogy and structure
Reference formula: CuZn(AsO4)(OH). Zincolivenite has the ideal formula CuZn(AsO4)(OH) and orthorhombic symmetry. It is chemically related to olivenite through zinc-copper substitution; COD 9011188 is used as a labelled representative natural structure. Zincolivenite is classified with arsenates and has orthorhombic crystal symmetry. Typical hardness is 3–4 on the Mohs scale and specific gravity is approximately 4.3–4.5.
Colour, lustre and habit
Typical colours include green, blue-green, yellow-green. The usual prismatic, tabular, granular habit and vitreous, pearly lustre help describe a specimen, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and notable localities
Zincolivenite forms in or is associated with oxidised copper-zinc-arsenic deposits and secondary cavities in hydrothermal ore systems. Important documented localities include Tsumeb, Lavrion, Mexico, Namibia and other arsenate-rich copper districts.
Green arsenate geometry in the olivenite family
Zincolivenite is a compelling collector mineral when crystal shape and colour are clear. Its copper-zinc relationship gives the specimen a useful story beyond the usual green oxidation coating.
Collecting and care
Arsenic-bearing: keep enclosed, avoid dust and acids, and wash hands after handling. Protect small crystals from impact and retain analytical data.
