What is Zabuyelite?
Zabuyelite is a rare natural lithium carbonate from evaporitic brines, a quiet-looking mineral with an unusually direct connection to modern battery-material supply chains.
Mineralogy and structure
Reference formula: Li2CO3. Zabuyelite is monoclinic with the ideal formula Li2CO3. Natural crystals are rare because lithium carbonate is more often encountered as an industrial product; COD 9008283 provides an exact structural reference for the mineral record. Zabuyelite is classified with carbonates and has monoclinic crystal symmetry. Typical hardness is 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale and specific gravity is approximately 2.1–2.2.
Colour, lustre and habit
Typical colours include colourless, white, pale yellow. The usual tabular, granular, massive habit and vitreous, pearly lustre help describe a specimen, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and notable localities
Zabuyelite forms in or is associated with evaporation and precipitation in lithium-rich salt-lake brines and evaporite environments. Important documented localities include Zabuye Lake in Tibet, China and other high-altitude lithium brine systems.
A small crystal with a modern materials story
Zabuyelite is a standout educational and collector piece: its understated appearance connects evaporitic geology, lithium resources and the technology market without relying on a colour variety.
Collecting and care
Protect colourless crystals from contamination and strong acids. Keep the natural locality clear because industrial lithium carbonate is not automatically a mineral specimen.
