What is Xocomecatlite?
Xocomecatlite is a rare copper tellurite hydroxide, usually forming pale-green spherules or crusts in oxidised tellurium deposits.
Mineralogy and structure
Reference formula: Cu3TeO4(OH)4. Xocomecatlite is orthorhombic with the ideal formula Cu3TeO4(OH)4. No matching public COD coordinate entry was selected, so no artificial lattice is shown. Xocomecatlite is classified with tellurites and has orthorhombic crystal symmetry. Typical hardness is 3–4 on the Mohs scale and specific gravity is approximately 3.6–3.9.
Colour, lustre and habit
Typical colours include pale green, green, blue-green. The usual spherical, botryoidal, crusty habit and vitreous, pearly, dull lustre help describe a specimen, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and notable localities
Xocomecatlite forms in or is associated with secondary oxidation zones of tellurium-rich copper-gold-silver veins. Important documented localities include the Tombstone district in Arizona, Utah, Mexico and other rare tellurium localities.
Pale-green spherules from a tellurium vein
Xocomecatlite is a classic micromount mineral: delicate spherules, unusual copper-tellurium chemistry and a documented Arizona association create the value.
Collecting and care
Soft and tellurium-bearing: keep sealed, dry and away from dust, food and children; avoid grinding and acids.
