What is Xifengite?
Xifengite is a rare iron silicide found in cosmic dust and unusual terrestrial metal-rich assemblages, recognised by its metallic appearance and high density.
Mineralogy and structure
Reference formula: Fe5Si3. Xifengite has the ideal formula Fe5Si3 and a hexagonal structure. COD 9009219 provides an exact structural reference; natural iron-silicide assemblages may contain related phases. Xifengite is classified with native elements and alloys and has hexagonal crystal symmetry. Typical hardness is 5–6 on the Mohs scale and specific gravity is approximately 6.2–6.6.
Colour, lustre and habit
Typical colours include steel grey, black, grey. The usual granular, massive, microscopic habit and metallic, sub-metallic lustre help describe a specimen, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and notable localities
Xifengite forms in or is associated with micrometeorites, placer concentrates, meteorites and reducing iron-silicon environments. Important documented localities include Yanshan micrometeorite occurrences in Hebei, China, Russia, Belarus and documented fulgurite or placer samples.
Metallic iron-silicon chemistry from cosmic dust
Xifengite is a specialist mineral with an outsized story: a tiny metallic grain can preserve evidence of reducing conditions beyond ordinary surface mineralogy.
Collecting and care
Protect small grains from abrasion and contamination; retain cosmic-dust or placer provenance and avoid grinding.
