What is Wadeite?
Wadeite is a rare potassium zirconium silicate found in alkaline igneous rocks and valued for its unusual chemistry and hexagonal crystal symmetry.
Mineralogy and structure
Reference formula: K2ZrSi3O9. Wadeite is hexagonal with the ideal formula K2ZrSi3O9. COD 1001111 provides an exact structural reference; natural material can show limited substitutions. Wadeite is classified with silicates and has hexagonal crystal symmetry. Typical hardness is 5–6 on the Mohs scale and specific gravity is approximately 3.2–3.4.
Colour, lustre and habit
Typical colours include colourless, white, pale pink, yellowish, brown. The usual prismatic, granular, massive habit and vitreous, pearly lustre help describe a specimen, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and notable localities
Wadeite forms in or is associated with alkaline syenites, nepheline-bearing rocks, pegmatites and silica-undersaturated magmatic systems. Important documented localities include Arkansas in the United States, Russia, Canada, Greenland and other alkaline complexes.
Zirconium chemistry in an alkaline rock
Wadeite appeals to collectors who value uncommon elements and locality stories. Its pale appearance is understated, so provenance and association do the selling work.
Collecting and care
Protect from sharp impact and acids; clean with a soft cloth and preserve the alkaline host-rock association.
