What is stabilized turquoise?
Stabilized turquoise is a trade and treatment term for porous turquoise that has been impregnated with a substance such as wax, polymer or resin. The treatment consolidates weak material, improves cutting and can make a chalky surface more suitable for polishing. It is not a new turquoise mineral species and should not be described as untreated natural turquoise.
Composition and crystal structure
The turquoise host is a hydrated copper-aluminium phosphate, commonly represented by CuAl6(PO4)4(OH)8·4H2O, but the treated commercial material contains both the natural host and an added filler. Because the treatment fills pores rather than creating one new homogeneous lattice, this guide intentionally does not show the untreated turquoise structure as if it belonged to the stabilized composite. The formula and triclinic classification of the canonical Turquoise page describe the host mineral only.
Colour, texture and appearance
Blue, blue-green and green material is common. Stabilization can deepen colour, reduce a chalky feel and produce a more even polish, while matrix, iron staining and natural veining remain part of the individual piece. A smooth or saturated surface is not proof of treatment by itself, so the seller should disclose the known treatment history rather than rely on appearance.
Commercial use and value
Stabilized turquoise makes attractive cabochons, beads, carvings and inlay from porous rough that would otherwise crumble during cutting. Its practical value comes from colour, pattern, cut quality and honest disclosure. It should be priced and presented as treated turquoise; reconstituted turquoise made from fragments or powder bonded into a mass is a related but different commercial material.
Identification and care
Magnification, a careful examination of pores and surface texture, spectroscopy and laboratory testing can help identify impregnation. Do not use a hot point, solvents or destructive testing on a finished piece. Keep stabilized turquoise away from high heat, strong chemicals, ultrasonic or steam cleaning and prolonged soaking; wipe gently with a soft cloth and store it separately from harder stones.
