What is Qingsongite?
Qingsongite is natural cubic boron nitride, an exceptionally rare high-pressure mineral with diamond-like hardness and a dark, subdued appearance.
Mineralogy and crystal structure
Reference formula: BN. Qingsongite is the cubic polymorph of boron nitride and is distinct from common hexagonal boron nitride. Its structure, hardness and rarity make analytical confirmation especially important. Qingsongite is classified with nitrides and has a cubic crystal system. Typical hardness is 9–10 on the Mohs scale and specific gravity is approximately 3.4–3.5.
Colour, lustre and habit
Typical colours include black, dark grey, blue-grey. The usual granular, massive habit and vitreous, adamantine lustre help describe a specimen, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and notable localities
Qingsongite forms in or is associated with ultra-high-pressure rocks and inclusions in chromitite from mantle-derived ophiolitic environments. Important documented localities include the Luobusa ophiolite in Tibet and a very small number of authenticated high-pressure occurrences.
A dark mineral with diamond-like chemistry
Qingsongite is a collector mineral where the science is the selling point: a tiny grain records extreme pressure and a natural cubic structure otherwise associated with engineered materials.
Collecting and care
Protect from impact despite its high hardness and preserve the matrix, locality and analytical record. Do not cut or grind rare natural material without professional controls.
