Ophicalcite is a decorative rock made from serpentinized material and calcite, valued for green colour, breccia-like pattern and polish.
Ophicalcite is a metamorphic and metasomatic rock composed mainly of serpentine-group minerals and calcite. It is not a single mineral species, so its colour, texture and properties vary with the proportions of its components.
The rock commonly shows green serpentine fragments or veins crossed by white, cream or pale calcite. Dark magnetite and other accessory minerals may add contrast. Brecciation, veining and recrystallization create patterns that become especially clear after polishing.
Ophicalcite develops where carbonate-bearing fluids interact with serpentinite or other magnesium-rich rocks. It is known from metamorphic belts and historic ornamental-stone districts in Europe and elsewhere.
Ophicalcite is useful when a design needs natural green fields with irregular white movement. Each plate can reveal a different balance of serpentine and calcite, so the material is selected for pattern as well as colour.
