What is Gadolinite-(Ce)?
Gadolinite-(Ce) is a rare cerium-bearing beryllium silicate from evolved rare-element rocks and pegmatites.
Mineralogy and structure
Reference formula: Ce2FeBe2Si2O10. Gadolinite-(Ce) is a mineral-group name based on the dominant rare-earth element. Alteration and compositional substitutions are common, so reliable provenance is important. Gadolinite-(Ce) belongs to the silicates and has a monoclinic crystal system. Typical hardness is 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale and specific gravity is approximately 4.2–4.6.
Colour and appearance
Typical colours include black, dark green, brown. The usual prismatic, granular, massive habit and vitreous, resinous lustre are useful descriptive features, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and localities
Gadolinite-(Ce) forms in or is associated with rare-element pegmatites, alkaline rocks and altered granitic environments. Important documented localities include Sweden, Norway, Madagascar, Russia, Canada and the United States.
Collecting and care
Keep as a labelled display specimen and avoid cutting or grinding unknown rare-earth-bearing material.
