What is Fresnoite?
Fresnoite is a barium titanium silicate, usually yellow to brown and associated with unusual alkaline or metamorphosed carbonate-rich rocks.
Mineralogy and structure
Reference formula: Ba2TiSi2O8. Fresnoite has a tetragonal structure and the formula Ba2TiSi2O8. Its colour and association are useful field clues, but uncommon material may require analytical confirmation.
Colour and appearance
Typical colours include yellow, brown-yellow, orange-brown, white. The usual tabular, prismatic, granular habit and vitreous, resinous lustre are useful descriptive features, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and localities
Fresnoite forms in or is associated with metamorphic and metasomatic environments, alkaline rocks and barium-rich contact zones. Important documented localities include California, the United States, Italy, Japan, Russia and other unusual alkaline occurrences.
Collecting and care
Protect crystals from impact and preserve the matrix; use neutral lighting because yellow-brown tones can be altered by surface films.
Fresnoite and warm colour
The yellow and honey-brown colours of Fresnoite are often the first reason a collector notices it, while its unusual chemistry rewards a closer look. Colour-based symbolism may use themes of warmth or curiosity, but these are cultural interpretations only.
Traditional associations
Some colour-based crystal lists attach yellow minerals to solar or fire signs. These assignments vary by tradition and are not properties of Fresnoite.
