What is Ekanite?
Ekanite is a rare thorium-bearing calcium silicate, typically green to brown and often metamict or only partly crystalline in nature.
Mineralogy and structure
Reference formula: ThCa2Si8O20. Ekanite can contain enough radioactive thorium to damage its own lattice over geological time, producing metamict material. The reference model uses a verified non-metamict structure.
Colour and appearance
Typical colours include green, yellow-green, brown, black. The usual granular, massive, prismatic habit and vitreous, resinous lustre are useful descriptive features, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and localities
Ekanite forms in or is associated with skarns, metamorphic rocks and unusual thorium-rich silicate assemblages. Important documented localities include Sri Lanka, Canada, Norway, Italy and the United States.
Collecting and care
Keep labelled and avoid cutting or grinding; store radioactive specimens responsibly and follow local collection rules.
Ekanite in popular symbolism
Modern crystal guides sometimes associate Ekanite with symbolic themes based on colour or collecting tradition. These associations are cultural interpretations, not mineralogical or medical properties.
