What is Domeykite?
Domeykite is a copper arsenide found in copper deposits and preserved as a rare metallic collector mineral.
Mineralogy and structure
The reference formula is Cu3As. Domeykite is arsenic-bearing and should be handled as a display specimen only. Its metallic appearance can be altered by tarnish and oxidation.
Colour and appearance
Typical colours include tin-white, grey, black. Its granular, massive, botryoidal habit and metallic lustre are useful descriptive features, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and localities
Domeykite forms in or is associated with hydrothermal copper deposits and arsenide-rich ore assemblages. Important documented localities include Chile, Mexico, Germany, the United States and other copper districts.
Collecting and care
Domeykite is best kept as a labelled reference or collector specimen. Protect fragile crystals from impact and avoid cutting or grinding unknown material. Lead-, arsenic-, vanadium- and copper-bearing specimens are for display and careful handling only.
Domeykite in popular symbolism
Some modern crystal guides associate Domeykite with zodiac signs or symbolic themes based on colour, locality or collecting tradition. These associations vary between sources and are cultural interpretations, not mineralogical or medical properties.
