What is Djurleite?
Djurleite is a copper sulfide of the chalcocite group, usually identified in fine-grained copper ore assemblages rather than as large display crystals.
Mineralogy and structure
The reference formula is Cu31S16. Djurleite is monoclinic and part of a complex family of copper sulfides with related compositions and structural transformations.
Colour and appearance
Typical colours include black, dark grey. Its massive, granular habit and metallic lustre are useful descriptive features, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and localities
Djurleite forms in or is associated with secondary enrichment zones and low-temperature hydrothermal copper deposits. Important documented localities include Chile, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and other copper districts.
Collecting and care
Djurleite is best kept as a labelled reference or collector specimen. Protect fragile crystals from impact and avoid cutting or grinding unknown material. Lead-, arsenic-, vanadium- and copper-bearing specimens are for display and careful handling only.
Djurleite in popular symbolism
Some modern crystal guides associate Djurleite with zodiac signs or symbolic themes based on colour, locality or collecting tradition. These associations vary between sources and are cultural interpretations, not mineralogical or medical properties.
