What is Djerfisherite?
Djerfisherite is a rare potassium-bearing iron-nickel copper sulfide known from unusual sulfide assemblages and some meteorites.
Mineralogy and structure
The reference formula is K6(Fe,Ni,Cu)25S26Cl. Djerfisherite has compositionally variable metal sites. It is mainly a scientific and collector reference mineral rather than a common gem material.
Colour and appearance
Typical colours include bronze, brown, black. Its granular, massive habit and metallic lustre are useful descriptive features, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and localities
Djerfisherite forms in or is associated with reducing sulfide-rich environments, alkaline intrusions and meteorite-related assemblages. Important documented localities include Russia, Canada, the United States and selected meteorite occurrences.
Collecting and care
Djerfisherite is best kept as a labelled reference or collector specimen. Protect fragile crystals from impact and avoid cutting or grinding unknown material. Lead-, arsenic-, vanadium- and copper-bearing specimens are for display and careful handling only.
Djerfisherite in popular symbolism
Some modern crystal guides associate Djerfisherite with zodiac signs or symbolic themes based on colour, locality or collecting tradition. These associations vary between sources and are cultural interpretations, not mineralogical or medical properties.
