What is Digenite?
Digenite is a copper sulfide found in copper ore systems, usually as dark massive or granular material associated with covellite, chalcocite and bornite.
Mineralogy and structure
The reference formula is Cu9S5. Digenite is commonly compositionally variable and may coexist with several closely related copper sulfides. Massive material is more common than well-formed crystals.
Colour and appearance
Typical colours include blue-black, dark grey, black. Its massive, granular, platy habit and metallic, sub-metallic lustre are useful descriptive features, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and localities
Digenite forms in or is associated with secondary enrichment zones and hydrothermal copper deposits. Important documented localities include Chile, Peru, Mexico, the United States, Canada and other copper districts.
Collecting and care
Digenite is best kept as a labelled reference or collector specimen. Protect fragile crystals from impact and avoid cutting or grinding unknown material. Lead-, arsenic-, vanadium- and copper-bearing specimens are for display and careful handling only.
Digenite in popular symbolism
Some modern crystal guides associate Digenite with zodiac signs or symbolic themes based on colour, locality or collecting tradition. These associations vary between sources and are cultural interpretations, not mineralogical or medical properties.
