What is Descloizite?
Descloizite is a lead-zinc vanadate recognised by red-brown to orange crystals and botryoidal coatings in oxidised ore deposits.
Mineralogy and structure
The reference formula is PbZn(VO4)(OH). Lead-bearing vanadates are display minerals only. Colour and habit overlap with related vanadates, so locality and association are valuable for identification.
Colour and appearance
Typical colours include red-brown, brown, orange, black. Its prismatic, botryoidal, granular habit and resinous, adamantine lustre are useful descriptive features, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and localities
Descloizite forms in or is associated with oxidised zones of lead and zinc deposits where vanadium-bearing fluids circulate. Important documented localities include Namibia, Mexico, Zambia, Argentina, Morocco and the United States.
Collecting and care
Descloizite is best kept as a labelled reference or collector specimen. Protect fragile crystals from impact and avoid cutting or grinding unknown material. Lead-, arsenic-, vanadium- and copper-bearing specimens are for display and careful handling only.
Descloizite in popular symbolism
Some modern crystal guides associate Descloizite with zodiac signs or symbolic themes based on colour, locality or collecting tradition. These associations vary between sources and are cultural interpretations, not mineralogical or medical properties.
