What is Delhayelite?
Delhayelite is a rare hydrated potassium-sodium aluminosilicate associated with alkaline igneous rocks and feldspathoid mineral assemblages.
Mineralogy and structure
The reference formula is K2NaAl3Si3O10(OH)2·H2O. Delhayelite is a layered silicate whose pale colour and fine aggregates make locality and association especially important for identification.
Colour and appearance
Typical colours include white, colourless, pale yellow. Its platy, prismatic, massive habit and pearly, vitreous lustre are useful descriptive features, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and localities
Delhayelite forms in or is associated with alkaline syenites, nepheline-rich rocks and late-stage cavities. Important documented localities include the Kola Peninsula, Russia, Canada, Greenland and other alkaline complexes.
Collecting and care
Delhayelite is best kept as a labelled reference or collector specimen. Protect fragile crystals from impact and avoid cutting or grinding unknown material. Lead-, arsenic-, vanadium- and copper-bearing specimens are for display and careful handling only.
Delhayelite in popular symbolism
Some modern crystal guides associate Delhayelite with zodiac signs or symbolic themes based on colour, locality or collecting tradition. These associations vary between sources and are cultural interpretations, not mineralogical or medical properties.
