What is Danburite?
Danburite is a boron-bearing calcium silicate that forms clear to pale prismatic crystals and is used both as a collector mineral and a durable gemstone.
Mineralogy and structure
The reference formula is CaB2Si2O8. The orthorhombic structure contains boron-oxygen groups linked with silicate tetrahedra. Transparent material may show attractive brilliance after cutting.
Colour and appearance
Typical colours include colourless, pale yellow, pink, brown. Its prismatic, tabular habit and vitreous lustre are useful descriptive features, but colour alone is not diagnostic.
Formation and localities
Danburite forms in or is associated with granitic pegmatites, hydrothermal veins and contact-metamorphic environments. Important documented localities include Mexico, Madagascar, Myanmar, Japan, Russia and the United States.
Collecting and care
Danburite is best kept as a labelled reference or collector specimen. Protect fragile crystals from impact and avoid cutting or grinding unknown material. Lead-, arsenic-, vanadium- and copper-bearing specimens are for display and careful handling only.
Danburite in popular symbolism
Some modern crystal guides associate Danburite with zodiac signs or symbolic themes based on colour, locality or collecting tradition. These associations vary between sources and are cultural interpretations, not mineralogical or medical properties.
