Coral is a biogenic carbonate material with organic growth structures, used in decorative work for its natural colour and branch-like pattern.
Coral is not a mineral. It is the calcium-carbonate skeleton produced by colonial marine animals. After burial and preservation, coral can become a decorative material whose value depends on origin, condition, colour and the visibility of its natural structure.
Natural coral may show branching forms, small pores, concentric growth lines or compact sections. White, cream, pink, red, orange and dark tones are known in decorative materials. Colour and texture can vary sharply within one piece.
Coral skeletons form in marine environments, and fossil or subfossil material may later be preserved in sediment or altered by geological processes. The exact source and legal status matter for any natural coral material, so provenance should be recorded whenever it is known.
Coral provides warm organic colour and a distinctive biological pattern. In mosaic, small pieces can be used as accents, flowers or textured highlights. It should be cut and polished gently because porous or altered pieces may be more fragile than dense stone.
