What is Cadmoselite?
Cadmoselite is a rare cadmium selenide of the wurtzite group, usually forming tiny hexagonal crystals or cement in selenium-rich ore deposits.
Mineralogy and structure
The reference formula is CdSe. Cadmoselite belongs to the sulfides and crystallises in the hexagonal system. Its hexagonal wurtzite-type structure is shared with related minerals such as greenockite and wurtzite. Cadmium and selenium make this a specialist display mineral, not a material for cutting or jewellery.
Colour and appearance
Typical colours include light grey, brownish grey and black. For small or complex mineral species, crystal size, transparency, lustre and matrix association are often more diagnostic than colour alone.
Formation and localities
Cadmoselite forms in or is associated with selenium-rich hydrothermal and polymetallic ore deposits. Important documented localities include Argentina, Russia, the United States and other selenium-cadmium districts. A precise mine or geological setting is preferable to a broad country label when it is known.
Collecting and care
Cadmoselite is best treated as a labelled reference or collector specimen. Protect fragile crystals from impact and humidity changes. Arsenic-, cadmium-, lead-, thorium- and selenium-bearing minerals should not be cut, ground or used in jewellery; wash hands after handling and keep them away from food and children.
