What is Bronzite?
Bronzite is an iron-bearing variety of enstatite in the orthopyroxene group. It is widely known as a brown ornamental and collector material, although its composition is a range rather than one fixed end-member formula.
Mineralogy and structure
Bronzite is commonly represented by (Mg,Fe)2Si2O6 and uses the orthorhombic enstatite structure as its representative model. Iron content changes the colour, density and optical appearance along the enstatite-ferrosilite series.
Colour and appearance
Colours range from grey-brown and green-brown to bronze and nearly black. Cleavage surfaces may show a distinctive submetallic or silky schiller effect caused by fine inclusions and compositional texture.
Formation and localities
Bronzite occurs in peridotite, pyroxenite, norite, basalt and related metamorphic rocks. It is also found in some meteorites and altered ultramafic bodies. Material is known from India, Austria, the United States, the Czech Republic, South Africa and other mafic-ultramafic regions.
Collecting and care
Polished bronzite is used as an ornamental stone, while natural specimens are best documented with their host rock and locality. The linked structure is representative of the enstatite-type framework, not a claim that every specimen has identical iron content.
Bronzite and zodiac signs
Popular crystal guides may associate Bronzite with Leo or Capricorn because of its bronze colour and grounding visual character. These are modern symbolic associations only.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
In esoteric writing, bronzite is often described with themes of steadiness, confidence and composure. These meanings are cultural and have no established medical or physical effect.
