What is Bromargyrite?
Bromargyrite is silver bromide and a member of the silver halide group. It is usually earthy or granular, but cubic forms may occur in well-developed specimens.
Mineralogy and structure
Bromargyrite has the formula AgBr and crystallises in the cubic system. Hardness is about 2.5-3 and specific gravity is high because of silver.
Colour and appearance
Colours range from pale yellow and greenish yellow to brown, grey and darkened material. Lustre is resinous to waxy, and surfaces can alter under light and weathering.
Formation and localities
It forms in the oxidised portions of silver deposits, particularly in arid regions. Important occurrences are reported from Mexico, Chile, the United States, Australia, Germany and Namibia.
Collecting and care
Silver halides can be sensitive to light and alteration, so store specimens in stable conditions. A locality and mineral association are valuable because several secondary silver minerals look alike.
Bromargyrite and zodiac signs
Some crystal lists connect Bromargyrite with Scorpio or Capricorn because of its silver content and darkening behaviour. These are symbolic traditions only.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
Esoteric writing may use bromargyrite as a symbol of light-sensitive change and hidden value. This metaphor should not be confused with a proven effect.
