What is Breithauptite?
Breithauptite is a rare nickel antimonide and a member of the nickel ore mineral assemblage. It is usually encountered by specialists in massive or granular material rather than large crystals.
Mineralogy and structure
Breithauptite has the formula NiSb and crystallises in the hexagonal system. Its hardness is about 3.5-4 and specific gravity is high because of nickel and antimony.
Colour and appearance
Fresh material is copper red, bronze or brown with metallic lustre. It may tarnish and is often granular or massive, with prismatic forms less common in collections.
Formation and localities
The mineral forms in hydrothermal nickel deposits with nickeline, maucherite, gersdorffite, millerite and other nickel minerals. Localities include Germany, Norway, Russia, Canada, Morocco and Australia.
Collecting and care
A documented locality is important because several metallic nickel minerals resemble one another. Keep it as a display specimen and avoid dust from cutting or grinding.
Breithauptite and zodiac signs
Some modern symbolic pages connect Breithauptite with Scorpio or Capricorn because of its metallic colour and deep ore setting. This is not mineralogical information.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
Esoteric writing may use breithauptite as a symbol of resilience and hidden strength. Such language should remain clearly separate from scientific identification.
