What is Braunite?
Braunite is a manganese-rich silicate oxide that commonly occurs with other manganese oxides and silicates. It is important in ore geology and can form attractive black crystals on contrasting matrix.
Mineralogy and structure
A commonly used formula is Mn2+Mn6(SiO4)O8. Braunite crystallises in the tetragonal system and has hardness around 6-6.5 with high density.
Colour and appearance
Braunite is black, brown-black or dark grey, with metallic to sub-metallic lustre. Tetragonal pyramidal forms, granular masses and compact ore are typical.
Formation and localities
It forms in metamorphosed manganese deposits and may occur with hausmannite, bixbyite, pyrolusite, rhodonite and quartz. Important material comes from South Africa, India, Germany, Brazil, Australia and Russia.
Collecting and care
Sharp crystals and contrasting manganese ore matrix are especially attractive. Because black manganese minerals can look alike, the geological setting and analytical identification should be recorded.
Braunite and zodiac signs
Popular crystal lists sometimes connect Braunite with Capricorn or Scorpio because of its dark earth colour and ore-forming environment. These links are symbolic only.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
In esoteric writing, braunite may represent endurance, grounding and concentration. These meanings are cultural and should not be presented as mineral effects.
