What is Brannerite?
Brannerite is a uranium-bearing oxide mineral and an important host for uranium in some deposits. Its colour, high density and alteration textures are more common than large well-formed crystals.
Mineralogy and structure
The formula is UTi2O6. Brannerite crystallises in the monoclinic system and has variable composition because uranium, titanium, thorium, rare-earth elements and iron may substitute or enter alteration products.
Colour and appearance
Fresh material is black, brown, olive green or yellow-brown, with vitreous, resinous or dull lustre. It commonly occurs as grains, altered masses and detrital crystals rather than showy large specimens.
Formation and localities
Brannerite occurs in granitic and metamorphic rocks, uranium deposits and placer material. Localities include Australia, Canada, France, Spain, the United States, Russia and several African uranium districts.
Collecting and care
Brannerite is radioactive and should be handled only as a controlled display specimen. Store it sealed with appropriate labelling, minimise exposure and follow local regulations for radioactive minerals.
Brannerite and zodiac signs
Some symbolic pages connect Brannerite with Capricorn or Scorpio because of its dark colour, depth and radioactive geology. This is not a scientific or safety recommendation.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
Esoteric writing may describe brannerite through themes of deep time and transformation, but no spiritual or health claims should be made for radioactive material.
