What is Brandtite?
Brandtite is a hydrated manganese arsenate and a member of the vivianite group. Its pink colour and association with manganese ores make it a distinctive but uncommon collector mineral.
Mineralogy and structure
The formula is Mn2+AsO4·2H2O. Brandtite crystallises in the monoclinic system, is soft and contains structurally bound water.
Colour and appearance
Crystals are commonly pale pink, rose, lilac or brownish, with vitreous to pearly lustre. Prismatic, tabular and granular forms can occur on manganese oxide matrix.
Formation and localities
Brandtite forms in oxidised manganese deposits and may occur with rhodochrosite, pyrolusite, arsenates and quartz. Localities are known from Germany, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Australia and the United States.
Collecting and care
The mineral is soft and should be protected from abrasion and humidity. Arsenate minerals are for display only; avoid cutting, grinding and use in jewellery.
Brandtite and zodiac signs
Popular crystal pages may associate Brandtite with Libra or Pisces because of its pale pink colour. These links are cultural and not scientific.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
Esoteric writing may use brandtite as a symbol of gentle colour emerging from an ore environment. This is storytelling, not a claim about effects on health or mood.
