What is Boulangerite?
Boulangerite is a lead antimony sulphosalt recognised more often as fibrous or massive material than as large isolated crystals. It belongs to the complex family of ore minerals found in hydrothermal veins.
Mineralogy and structure
The formula is Pb5Sb4S11. Boulangerite is monoclinic, soft at about 2-3 and dense because of lead and antimony.
Colour and appearance
It is usually lead grey to black with metallic or dull lustre. Long fine fibres can form felted masses, sprays and hair-like coatings, while compact granular material is also known.
Formation and localities
Boulangerite forms in low-temperature lead-antimony veins with galena, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, quartz and carbonates. Classic districts occur in Romania, Germany, Bolivia, Mexico, Peru and the United Kingdom.
Collecting and care
Fine fibres are delicate and should be protected from vibration and abrasion. Because the material contains lead, it is for display only and should not be cut or used in jewellery.
Boulangerite and zodiac signs
Popular crystal guides may associate Boulangerite with Scorpio or Capricorn because of its dark metallic colour. Such links are cultural and not scientific.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
Esoteric descriptions may use boulangerite as a metaphor for hidden threads and complex connections. This symbolic language should not be presented as a verified property.
