What is Botallackite?
Botallackite is a copper chloride hydroxide and one of the polymorphs related to atacamite and paratacamite. It is generally found as delicate coatings rather than large isolated crystals.
Mineralogy and structure
The formula is Cu2Cl(OH)3. Botallackite crystallises in the monoclinic system and has hardness around 2.5-3. Its hydrated layered structure contributes to its delicate habit.
Colour and appearance
Colours are pale to medium green, blue-green or grey-green. Thin tabular and foliated crystals form crusts, rosettes and coatings with pearly to vitreous lustre.
Formation and localities
It forms in chloride-rich oxidation environments, including coastal mine workings and weathered copper deposits. The name comes from Botallack in Cornwall; material is also known from Chile, Australia, Mexico and the United States.
Collecting and care
Botallackite is fragile and should be protected from moisture changes and touching. Because related copper chloride polymorphs can be difficult to separate visually, locality and analysis are important.
Botallackite and zodiac signs
Some crystal guides associate Botallackite with Taurus or Cancer because of its green colour and coastal chloride setting. These associations are symbolic only.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
Esoteric writing may use botallackite as a symbol of adaptation to changing environments. This is a cultural metaphor, not a verified property.
