What is Borax?
Borax is a hydrated sodium borate and one of the best-known minerals from alkaline evaporite lakes. It can form large pale crystals when boron-rich brines evaporate.
Mineralogy and structure
The formula is Na2B4O7·10H2O. Borax crystallises in the monoclinic system, has low hardness and loses or gains water depending on humidity and temperature.
Colour and appearance
Crystals are generally colourless, white or grey, with vitreous to pearly lustre. Prismatic and tabular forms may occur in crusts, granular masses or transparent clusters.
Formation and localities
Borax forms in alkaline saline lakes and dry playas where boron-rich water evaporates. Famous localities include California and Nevada in the United States, Tibet, Turkey, Chile and Argentina.
Collecting and care
Keep borax dry and do not wash it, because hydration and dissolution can damage the specimen. It is a soft evaporite mineral and should be stored separately from harder pieces.
Borax and zodiac signs
Crystal guides sometimes associate Borax with Cancer or Pisces because of its connection with saline water. This is symbolic folklore rather than mineral science.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
In esoteric storytelling, borax may represent cleansing, concentration and the residue left by evaporation. These are metaphors and not claims about a mineral effect.
