What is Boracite?
Boracite is a borate mineral associated with evaporites and salt deposits. It is unusually hard for a salt-related mineral and can show different structural states depending on temperature.
Mineralogy and structure
The formula is Mg3B7O13Cl. Boracite is orthorhombic at ordinary conditions, while higher-temperature forms have higher symmetry. Hardness is about 7-7.5.
Colour and appearance
Crystals can be colourless, white, pale green or blue and may show tetrahedral or pseudo-cubic forms. Fibrous aggregates known as stassfurtite are an important variety.
Formation and localities
Boracite forms in marine evaporites and salt-dome caprocks with gypsum, anhydrite, halite and other evaporite minerals. Classic localities include Stassfurt in Germany, Poland, Austria, Russia and the United States.
Collecting and care
Boracite is harder than many associated salts but still deserves protection from impact. The variety and structural state should be recorded where known, especially for fibrous material.
Boracite and zodiac signs
Popular birthstone pages may connect Boracite with Capricorn or Aquarius because of its salt-deposit origin and unusual hardness. These are non-scientific associations.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
Esoteric writing may present boracite as a symbol of structure, clarity and resilience within changing environments. It should remain a cultural interpretation.
