What is Boleite?
Boleite is one of the most visually striking rare halide minerals. Its intense blue colour and complex composition reflect unusual low-temperature alteration in chloride-rich ore environments.
Mineralogy and structure
The formula is KAg9Pb26Cu24Cl62(OH)48. Boleite crystallises in the cubic system and is relatively soft, with high density from lead and silver.
Colour and appearance
The mineral is usually deep blue to indigo, with vitreous or pearly lustre. Cubic crystals may occur singly or in clusters, sometimes with anglesite, pseudoboleite and other oxidised lead minerals.
Formation and localities
Boleite forms in the oxidised zones of lead-copper deposits, especially in arid or chloride-rich environments. The type locality is in Baja California, Mexico; related occurrences are known from a small number of classic districts.
Collecting and care
Boleite is rare and usually forms small crystals, so provenance and a documented locality are important. Lead-bearing specimens should be handled as display objects and kept away from food and children.
Boleite and zodiac signs
Crystal websites sometimes associate Boleite with Scorpio or Aquarius because of its deep blue colour and rarity. Such associations are symbolic, not scientific.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
Esoteric writers may describe boleite as a symbol of depth, mystery and unusual transformation. These ideas belong to modern crystal culture rather than mineralogy.
