What is Blödite?
Blödite is an evaporite mineral that records the chemistry of saline water as it concentrates and crystallises. Its pale appearance and water content make it sensitive to humidity.
Mineralogy and structure
The formula is Na2Mg(SO4)2·4H2O. Blödite crystallises in the monoclinic system, has low hardness and a low specific gravity typical of hydrated salts.
Colour and appearance
Blödite is usually colourless, white or grey and may form prismatic, tabular or granular crystals. Surfaces can show vitreous or pearly lustre, while weathered material may become dull and powdery.
Formation and localities
It forms in saline lakes, evaporite sequences and salt-dome environments where sodium, magnesium and sulphate become concentrated. Occurrences are known from Spain, Germany, Russia, Central Asia, Chile and other arid regions.
Collecting and care
Keep blödite in a dry, stable environment and avoid washing it. Because hydration can change the specimen, a label should record storage conditions and the exact locality whenever known.
Blödite and zodiac signs
Popular crystal guides may associate Blödite with Pisces or Cancer because of its connection with water and evaporite lakes. These links are poetic rather than scientific.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
Esoteric descriptions may use blödite to represent preservation, concentration and cycles of water. The symbolism should not be presented as a physical or medical claim.
