What is Bayerite?
Bayerite is one of the aluminium hydroxide phases and is most often encountered in fine-grained or earthy material rather than large collector crystals. It is closely related to gibbsite and nordstrandite.
Mineralogy and structure
The formula is Al(OH)3. Bayerite is commonly described as monoclinic, with low hardness around 2.5-3 and low specific gravity near 2.5. Hydration and structural ordering affect its physical appearance.
Colour and appearance
It is generally colourless, white, grey or pale and may have pearly surfaces, earthy coatings or compact aggregates. Large transparent crystals are uncommon in ordinary collections.
Formation and localities
Bayerite can form during low-temperature weathering and as a metastable product in aluminium-rich soils, bauxite and industrially prepared systems. Localities are reported in Europe, the Americas, China and Australia.
Collecting and care
Because several aluminium hydroxides are visually similar, a precise label should include the analytical basis and locality. Keep soft material dry and away from scratching surfaces.
Bayerite and zodiac signs
Popular crystal lists may connect Bayerite with Virgo or Capricorn because of its pale, orderly appearance. These associations are not mineralogical facts.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
In symbolic writing, bayerite may represent simplicity, refinement and gradual change during weathering. It should be presented as cultural interpretation rather than a healing claim.
