What is Bastnäsite-(Ce)?
Bastnäsite-(Ce) is the cerium-dominant member of the bastnäsite group. It is important in rare-earth geology and can occur as attractive yellow, brown or orange crystals in carbonatites and alkaline rocks.
Mineralogy and structure
Bastnäsite-(Ce) has the formula Ce(CO3)F and crystallises in the hexagonal system. Hardness is about 4-4.5 and density is high because of the rare-earth element content.
Colour and appearance
Colours range from pale yellow and honey to reddish brown and orange. Crystals may be tabular, prismatic or granular, with vitreous to resinous lustre. Fine grains are often embedded in a dark alkaline rock matrix.
Formation and localities
The mineral forms in carbonatites, alkaline complexes, skarns and hydrothermal veins. Important localities include Mountain Pass in the United States, Bayan Obo in China, Malawi, Pakistan, Norway and Russia.
Collecting and care
A locality and analytical identification are valuable because several rare-earth carbonates can look similar. Avoid relying on colour alone and keep the specimen dry and protected from abrasion.
Bastnäsite-(Ce) and zodiac signs
Some mineral and crystal pages associate Bastnäsite-(Ce) with Aquarius or Capricorn because of its rare-earth and geological themes. Such links are modern symbolic interpretations.
Symbolic and esoteric associations
Esoteric writing may describe rare-earth minerals as symbols of rarity, transformation and hidden resources. This language can enrich an educational story but has no established effect on people.
