What is augite?
Augite is a common calcium-rich clinopyroxene and an important rock-forming mineral in basaltic and gabbroic rocks. Its composition varies through solid solution, so natural augite is normally described with a variable formula rather than a single pure end member.
Mineralogy and structure
Augite belongs to the chain silicates and crystallises in the monoclinic system. It usually has Mohs hardness 5.5-6.5 and two cleavage directions that meet at approximately 90 degrees. The crystals are commonly short prisms or embedded grains.
Colour and appearance
Augite is usually dark green, brown, brownish black or black. It may be translucent in thin fragments but is commonly opaque in hand specimens. Vitreous lustre and simple or multiple twinning can be visible on fresh crystal faces.
Formation and localities
Augite crystallises from mafic and intermediate magmas and is common in basalt, gabbro, dolerite, diabase and related rocks. It is also found in some metamorphic rocks and meteorites. Important examples come from Italy, the United States, Canada, Russia, Japan and many volcanic regions.
Identification and collecting
Note the dark colour, prismatic habit, cleavage and relationship to the host rock. Augite can be confused with other pyroxenes and amphiboles, so locality and petrographic or analytical information are valuable when a species-level identification matters.
Augite and zodiac signs
In popular birthstone and zodiac guides, Augite is often associated with Aries and Scorpio. These zodiac crystal associations are part of modern spiritual culture and vary between traditions, countries and individual practitioners. They are not a mineralogical classification and should not be presented as a scientific property of the stone.
Esoteric meaning of Augite
Crystal collectors and readers of esoteric symbolism may choose Augite for its colour, texture, locality and personal meaning. In crystal healing and meditation traditions, it may be described with themes such as focus, grounding, protection, calm or confidence, depending on the source. These symbolic interpretations can be useful for storytelling and personal reflection, but there is no reliable scientific evidence that a mineral changes health, energy, luck or destiny.
Choosing Augite as a birthstone or symbolic crystal
When choosing a Augite birthstone, zodiac crystal or spiritual gift, compare the actual specimen: natural colour, crystal habit, transparency, inclusions, locality and condition. A mineral guide is more reliable when symbolic associations are kept separate from tested physical properties and from the description of an individual piece.
