What is antlerite?
Antlerite is a secondary copper sulphate hydroxide. It is most often found as green fibrous or acicular coatings rather than large isolated crystals, and it can occur with other oxidised copper minerals.
Mineralogy and structure
Antlerite has the formula Cu3SO4(OH)4 and crystallises in the orthorhombic system. Its hardness is about 3.5-4 and its specific gravity is close to 4. The hydrated sulphate structure reflects formation from copper- and sulphate-bearing surface fluids.
Colour and appearance
Dark green, blackish green and emerald-green coatings are common. Crystals may be slender needles or fibres arranged in sprays, crusts and earthy aggregates. The lustre ranges from vitreous on faces to silky on fibrous surfaces.
Formation and localities
Antlerite forms in the oxidised zones of copper deposits, especially where sulphate-rich fluids circulate in arid climates. It is well known from Chile and has also been reported from Australia, the United States, Mexico and other copper districts.
Collecting notes
Keep delicate sprays supported and dry. Since several green copper sulphates and carbonates can occur together, preserve the locality, matrix and association rather than relying on colour alone.
Antlerite and zodiac signs
In popular birthstone and zodiac guides, Antlerite is often associated with Taurus and Scorpio. These zodiac crystal associations are part of modern spiritual culture and vary between traditions, countries and individual practitioners. They are not a mineralogical classification and should not be presented as a scientific property of the stone.
Esoteric meaning of Antlerite
Crystal collectors and readers of esoteric symbolism may choose Antlerite for its colour, texture, locality and personal meaning. In crystal healing and meditation traditions, it may be described with themes such as focus, grounding, protection, calm or confidence, depending on the source. These symbolic interpretations can be useful for storytelling and personal reflection, but there is no reliable scientific evidence that a mineral changes health, energy, luck or destiny.
Choosing Antlerite as a birthstone or symbolic crystal
When choosing a Antlerite birthstone, zodiac crystal or spiritual gift, compare the actual specimen: natural colour, crystal habit, transparency, inclusions, locality and condition. A mineral guide is more reliable when symbolic associations are kept separate from tested physical properties and from the description of an individual piece.
