What is anhydrite?
Anhydrite is calcium sulphate without structural water. It is closely related to gypsum, which contains water in its structure, and the two minerals may replace one another as moisture and temperature conditions change.
Mineralogy and structure
Anhydrite has the formula CaSO4 and crystallises in the orthorhombic system. Its hardness is about 3-3.5 and its specific gravity is close to 3. It has three good cleavage directions and can form blocky, tabular or fibrous aggregates.
Colour and appearance
Colourless and white material is common, while blue, violet, grey or reddish tones can result from impurities and inclusions. Fresh surfaces have vitreous to pearly lustre. Compact anhydrite may look like other pale evaporite minerals without a close examination of cleavage and density.
Formation and localities
Anhydrite is characteristic of evaporite sequences deposited from saline water. It also forms by dehydration of gypsum during burial and in some hydrothermal or volcanic environments. Important localities include Germany, Italy, Austria, Mexico, the United States and evaporite basins worldwide.
Identification and collecting
Keep anhydrite dry and protected from uncontrolled humidity, because hydration can convert it toward gypsum. Note the cleavage, colour, associated evaporite minerals and locality when describing a specimen.
Anhydrite and zodiac signs
In popular birthstone and zodiac guides, Anhydrite is often associated with Capricorn and Aquarius. These zodiac crystal associations are part of modern spiritual culture and vary between traditions, countries and individual practitioners. They are not a mineralogical classification and should not be presented as a scientific property of the stone.
Esoteric meaning of Anhydrite
Crystal collectors and readers of esoteric symbolism may choose Anhydrite for its colour, texture, locality and personal meaning. In crystal healing and meditation traditions, it may be described with themes such as focus, grounding, protection, calm or confidence, depending on the source. These symbolic interpretations can be useful for storytelling and personal reflection, but there is no reliable scientific evidence that a mineral changes health, energy, luck or destiny.
Choosing Anhydrite as a birthstone or symbolic crystal
When choosing a Anhydrite birthstone, zodiac crystal or spiritual gift, compare the actual specimen: natural colour, crystal habit, transparency, inclusions, locality and condition. A mineral guide is more reliable when symbolic associations are kept separate from tested physical properties and from the description of an individual piece.
