What is anglesite?
Anglesite is lead sulphate, a secondary mineral produced when galena and other lead sulphides oxidize. Its high density and bright lustre are characteristic, but the mineral is fragile and should be handled as a display specimen.
Mineralogy and structure
Anglesite has the formula PbSO4 and crystallises in the orthorhombic system. It has Mohs hardness 2.5-3 and a specific gravity around 6.3-6.4. The crystal structure is related to that of barite and celestite, with lead occupying the large cation site.
Colour and appearance
Pure anglesite is colourless or white, while yellow, grey, green or blue tones may reflect inclusions and alteration. Crystals can be tabular, prismatic or bipyramidal, with adamantine to vitreous lustre.
Formation and localities
Anglesite forms in the oxidized zone of lead deposits, commonly around galena and with cerussite, pyromorphite, mimetite, limonite and quartz. Classic localities include Wales, Namibia, Morocco, Mexico, Australia and the United States.
Identification and care
Its density, lustre, cleavage and association with lead ore are useful clues. Lead-bearing specimens should be kept away from children and food areas, and hands should be washed after handling.
Anglesite and zodiac signs
In popular birthstone and zodiac guides, Anglesite is often associated with Capricorn and Scorpio. These zodiac crystal associations are part of modern spiritual culture and vary between traditions, countries and individual practitioners. They are not a mineralogical classification and should not be presented as a scientific property of the stone.
Esoteric meaning of Anglesite
Crystal collectors and readers of esoteric symbolism may choose Anglesite for its colour, texture, locality and personal meaning. In crystal healing and meditation traditions, it may be described with themes such as focus, grounding, protection, calm or confidence, depending on the source. These symbolic interpretations can be useful for storytelling and personal reflection, but there is no reliable scientific evidence that a mineral changes health, energy, luck or destiny.
Choosing Anglesite as a birthstone or symbolic crystal
When choosing a Anglesite birthstone, zodiac crystal or spiritual gift, compare the actual specimen: natural colour, crystal habit, transparency, inclusions, locality and condition. A mineral guide is more reliable when symbolic associations are kept separate from tested physical properties and from the description of an individual piece. Because Anglesite may contain toxic or radioactive elements, it should remain a display specimen and should never be cut, polished, used in jewellery or treated as a wellness product.
