What is adamite?
Adamite is a zinc arsenate hydroxide mineral that forms near the surface of oxidized zinc ore deposits. Its bright colours and well-formed crystals make it a popular collector mineral, especially from Mexico and Greece.
Mineralogy and structure
Adamite has the formula Zn2(AsO4)(OH) and crystallises in the orthorhombic system. Its hardness is about 3.5 and its specific gravity is high for a small pale-coloured crystal. It belongs to the olivenite group.
Colour and appearance
Yellow, honey-yellow and pale green are common, while copper-bearing material may be vivid green and cobalt-bearing material can be pink or purple. Crystals are often prismatic, radiating or botryoidal, with a vitreous to waxy lustre.
Formation and localities
Adamite forms in the oxidation zone above zinc-rich hydrothermal veins, commonly with smithsonite, scorodite, limonite, quartz and other arsenates. The Ojuela Mine in Mexico and the Lavrion district in Greece are classic sources.
Identification and collecting
Colour, crystal habit, fluorescence in some specimens and association with oxidized zinc ores are useful clues. Copper-bearing green material should be labelled carefully because similar colours occur in other secondary minerals.
Adamite and zodiac signs
In popular birthstone and zodiac guides, Adamite is often associated with Pisces and Aquarius. These zodiac crystal associations are part of modern spiritual culture and vary between traditions, countries and individual practitioners. They are not a mineralogical classification and should not be presented as a scientific property of the stone.
Esoteric meaning of Adamite
Crystal collectors and readers of esoteric symbolism may choose Adamite for its colour, texture, locality and personal meaning. In crystal healing and meditation traditions, it may be described with themes such as focus, grounding, protection, calm or confidence, depending on the source. These symbolic interpretations can be useful for storytelling and personal reflection, but there is no reliable scientific evidence that a mineral changes health, energy, luck or destiny.
Choosing Adamite as a birthstone or symbolic crystal
When choosing a Adamite birthstone, zodiac crystal or spiritual gift, compare the actual specimen: natural colour, crystal habit, transparency, inclusions, locality and condition. A mineral guide is more reliable when symbolic associations are kept separate from tested physical properties and from the description of an individual piece.
