Amethyst is one of the most well-known and widely collected varieties of quartz, valued for its violet to deep purple color and wide range of crystal forms. It occurs in geodes, clusters, single crystals, and complex growth habits, making each specimen unique. The characteristic purple color of amethyst is caused by trace amounts of iron combined with natural irradiation within the crystal structure.
