This spectacular amethyst druse comes from Artigas, Uruguay, one of the world’s most famous sources of deep violet amethyst. Formed millions of years ago in volcanic basalt pockets, this specimen features a dense carpet of sharp crystals, each 4–8 mm in size, glowing with intense purple saturation.
Unlike many Brazilian druses, Uruguayan amethyst is prized for its richer color, higher transparency, and tighter crystal growth. The geode displays a natural white quartz edging around the purple core, enhancing its visual appeal. Thanks to its flat base, the specimen stands securely on any surface without a stand.

Mineralogy

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz (SiO₂), colored by trace amounts of iron and irradiation. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and crystallizes in the hexagonal system. Uruguayan specimens are renowned for their vibrant, deep violet color and clarity.

Origin

This piece comes from Artigas, Uruguay—a world-famous locality known for producing some of the finest amethyst geodes. The region’s volcanic basalt provides the perfect environment for quartz growth, resulting in highly saturated, collectible crystals.
