Mineralogy
Siderite is part of the calcite group of carbonate minerals. Its iron-rich composition gives it distinct colors and density, differentiating it from other carbonates. It often occurs with sulfides such as pyrite and galena.
Origin
Chinese deposits are known for producing aesthetic siderite clusters with fine crystal definition, often associated with quartz and other gangue minerals.
Why Collect
Siderite is not as common in well-formed crystals as calcite or dolomite, making high-quality specimens desirable for collectors. It represents both mineralogical and historical significance as an iron ore.
